Collagen Stimulator

Sculptra Aesthetic – Collagen Stimulator

What is Sculptra?

Sculptra Aesthetic is an FDA-approved injectable that helps gradually replace lost collagen for results that can last more than two years. It is used to correct shallow to deep facial wrinkles and folds. Sculptra Aesthetic is made of poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA) and is injected into the deep dermis to help revitalize collagen production and help restore your skin’s inner structure and volume. As the PLLA microparticles are absorbed, they help stimulate collagen production. Rebuilt collagen strands begin to gradually help restore facial volume and the look of fullness to wrinkles and folds.

How does it compare to HA Fillers?

Hyaluronic Acid Fillers, such as Restylane or Juvederm, are liquid or gel substances that diminish lines by filling up the dermis space beneath wrinkles and creases. Results appear immediately and can last up to 6-12 months.

Collagen Stimulators, like Sculptra Aesthetic, are used to diminish facial wrinkles by helping to restore the deep, underlying structure of the skin. Results appear gradually over the treatment regimen (typically 2-3 treatments over the course of 3-4 months) and can last up to two years.

How do we Age?

Facial aging is due to changes in several types of tissue, including skin, fat, muscle, and bone.

Collagen loss is one of the primary reasons for visible facial aging. As the skin ages, the middle layer of skin (the dermis) thins due to collagen loss. Collagen is a fibrous protein found deep in the dermis and when we begin to lose it, it will reduce the skin’s ability to retain elasticity (from elastin) and moisture (from hyaluronic acid).

Your body slows collagen production throughout your adult life. By age 40, most people have up to 20% collagen loss. By 50, you face up to 30% collagen loss.

Can’t I just take supplements or use a cream?

Traditional creams are used to deliver collagen by absorbing into the skin. However, a collagen molecule is too large to actually penetrate the dermis of the skin. In reality, most of these treatments deliver moisture to the skin temporarily improving the appearance.

Taking collagen in a supplement form is meant to facilitate the production of collagen within the body. However, collagen is a protein that, when ingested, is broken down by the digestive system.
